Paris, J. Rondelet, 1808-1814

Second ed. of a treatise on construction and building techniques. Jean Rondelet (1743-1829) began his career in 1770, working for Jacques-Germain Soufflot, the architect of the most conspicuous and structurally daring church of the period, now known as the Pantheon in Paris. Rondelet assumed the role of technical expert, taking on more and more control not only of the structural design but of the site organisation as well. The treatise was one of the most extensive books on civil engineering and architecture written to that time and had a huge impact on French architects of the following generation such as Viollet-le-Duc. In contrast to earlier treatises, the work not only focussed on antique and classical architecture, but also included examples from Byzantine, Egyptian and modern architecture. Richly ill. with 192 engr. plt. (complete) by P. Gaitte, A. Moisy, L.S. Thiery, J.-V. Adam, C. Normand, and P.B. Rondelet.
