Second unofficial edition (1st off.: Paris, 1671; 2nd off.: Paris, 1684) of this poliorcetics and military science manual by the French engineer and cartographer Manesson-Mallet (1630-1706). (with some errors in numb.), showing plans, many cityscapes of 17th-c. Europe from an attacking point of view, different types of soldiers, artillery, etc. Contains chapters with information on the method of construction, the functions of the army, different ways to fortify, etc. and 1 "book" devoted to the "Turkish militia". Manesson-Mallet breaks with the tradition of military architecture treatises printed since the first half of the century and proposes a treatise which reports on the transformations carried out by Vauban. He started his career as a musketeer in the army of Louis XIV before entering into the service of the King of Portugal. He was appointed master of mathematics of Louis XIV's pages after coming back to France.
