Lot description

London, R. Phillips, 1799

2 vol., 4to: xxiii-[1]-642-[14], [2]-1/320-*321/*364-321/686-[10] pp.; 6 tables (3 folding maps lacking, foxing, some marg. lacks of paper corners).

Contemp. tree calf, flat spines with red leather labels (corners bumped, hinges slightly split, sl. worn).

First edition of the English translation by H. Neuman (1st French ed.: 1798, 8 vol., 8vo). This copy only contains 6 folding tables (legislative body, executive power, judicial order, election of the members of Congress in each state). It provides valuable information on the life, customs, eating habits of late 18th-c. Americans, as well as on Native Americans and some of the country’s most famous men, and extends to the political constitution of the country, physical state and natural history. The French duke de La Rochefoucauld (1747-1827), a progressive man who created a school for the poor soldiers' children in France, was one of the most active propagators of vaccination. Forced to emigrate during the French Revolution, he travelled to England and the rest of Great Britain from where he brought back new farming techniques before leaving for the United States for 3 years. Phillips's Catalogue of books at the end of vol. 1.
Ref. Sabin 39057.
