Lot description
1642
Drawing, black chalk on vellum, within framing lines, 23,6 x 30,2 cm, sign. and dated: "Pieter Quast Anno 1642".
Mounted by upper corners under passe-partout (sl. smudged lower right corner, minor fold, sm. dampstain upper right corner). Good condition.
The theme of the village doctor or quack is characteristic of Quast's (1605-1647) oeuvre. The Amsterdam artist specialised in the satirical genre painting of villagers, cripples and farmers, following the tradition established by the Bruegel family, A. Van de Venne and A. Brouwers. Quast produced finished drawings for sale, often drawn on vellum, as this sheet is. Prov. Edward Habich (stamp; Lugt 862). - E.J. Otto (stamp; Lugt 873b). - Jiles Boon (stamp; Lugt 3355).
