Lot description

Paris, F. Morel, 1569

8vo: [16]-122-[4-2 bl.]-127/173-[1] pp. (sl. foxing).

19th-c. vellum, gilt orn. spine with raised bands, brown spr. edges.

Rare edition estimated because of the notes of the philologist Jacopo Corbinelli (1535-ca. 1590). The edition is copied from the manuscript text of Francesco d'Amaretto Manelli dated 1384, preserving the old orthograph and contains from p. 127 the postils of that ms. text. The Corbaccio or also called the Labyrinth of love, presumably written in 1366, relates the dream the protagonist of the story had. In that dream, the deceased husband of the woman he fell in love with, an unreturned love, tries to free him from the labyrinth of love he had fallen in, by warning him, with his own experiences, against the lust of women, which endangers men. The spirit encourages him also to take revenge by revealing the true nature of women. The protagonist wakes up healed of all his troubles. Boccaccio concludes the work with warning the young people against the evil women.
