Lot description

Venice, Giunta Press, 1606

Folio: [18]-154 ff. (margins of first and last lvs reinforced with tape, edges frayed, dampstaining mainly in the blank margins and more obtrusive in first and last quires, some tiny wormwork in the margins, sl. browned).

Mod. half calf, marbled paper on covers, spine with 5 raised bands, red leather title label, endpapers renewed, ink titled side edge.

Later Italian translation of "Historia de la composicion del cuerpo humano" (first 1556) by J. Valverde (1525-1588). First published in Spanish (Rome 1556, under the title "Historia de la composición del cuerpo humano"). Ill. with an engr. title, an engr. portrait and 46 engr. anatomical plates derived almost entirely from Andreas Vesalius's "De humani corporis fabrica". "The first great original medical book in Spanish and the most original of the "plagiarisms" from Vesalius, although Valverde freely acknowledged that he took his illustrations from Vesalius, providing only four entirely new plates in his 42 engravings from the Vesalian woodcuts. The plates were engraved by Nicolas Beatrizet probably after Gaspar Beccera, a pupil of Michelangelo. The book contains numerous revisions to Vesalius and other discoveries by Valverde" (Garrison & Morton).
Ref. Cp. Wellcome I:6480 (Giunta Press 1607), Krivatsy 12144 (1608), Garrison & Morton 378.02 (1st ed.).
