Lot description

Paris, Jean, [1798-99]

Folio: engr. title, 3-[7] pp.; 10 pl. (two tiny holes in lower part of engr. title, first pl. spotted).

Kept together with a brown flexible mod. leather clamp, in mod. carboard portfolio and dito slipcase.

First published with title "Abregé d'anatomie, accommodé aux arts de peinture et de sculpture" and intended for the use of artists. Illustrated with 10 engraved anatomical plates by Petit after Leclerc realised for Vesalius' "De humani corporis fabrica" in reverse. The plates were first published by Roger de Piles in 1667/8. Last plate dated An VII. Some sources discuss the possibility of F. Tortebat (1616-1690), French portrait painter and engraver being the pseudonym for R. de Piles (1635-1709), French painter, engraver, art critic and diplomat. Wellcome states Tortebat and Piles were distinct individuals. Choulant mentions Roger de Piles wrote under the pseudonym François Tortebat, as he himself states in his "Cours de peinture par principes" (Paris, 1708, p. 153).
Ref.
