WOUWERMAN, Philips

Dutch landscape by the riverside.

Ca. 1650

Drawing, pen and brown ink with brown and grey wash, heightened with white, 23,5 x 36 cm, laid paper, signed in ink at the lower left corner "Wouwerman" (sm. piece of lower left corner missing, sm. hole with loss of paper at lower right corner).

Under passe-partout, under wooden frame (not studied outside frame).

A landscape with travellers along the riverbanks with a Dutch town in the right background and a farm house at the left. The general setting with a prominent tree in the middle foreground was a preferred compositional device of Wouwerman in his later Dutch landscape paintings, e.g. "Horses at a drinking pool", at the Gemäldegalerie Dresden (inv. 1447). The highly finished state of the drawing with brown wash indicates that the sheet was sold as a work of art on the Dutch art market.
