Lot description

1660

Drawing, brush in black and grey wash, framing lines in brown ink, 14,5 x 19 cm, laid paper, signed and dated in brown ink at upper right corner "PHiLS W / 1660" (trimmed to the framing line, some brown damp stains, attached by upper edge to paper support).

Under passe-partout, in wooden frame (not studied outside frame).

Embedded in the artistic environment and tradition of his home town of Haarlem, Wouwerman made an important and highly influential contribution to the canon of seventeenth-century Dutch painting and is known as one of the best painters of horses. Although many paintings by Wouwerman are known, his drawings are very rare. The most significant examples of his works are found in public collections, such as the Teylers Museum (Haarlem), the British Museum, and the Fodor Collection at the Amsterdam Museum. In the last twenty years, only three other significant drawings by the artist have appeared on the market, one of them now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (inv. no. 2013.144). At least two other practically identical versions of the same composition are now in the Teylers Museum (inv. P34) and the Hessisches Landesmuseum Darmstadt (AE 770). A third preparatory drawing with only the figure group of the man with the pack-horse can be found in the Leiden University Collection (PK-T-2144). It was not uncommon for an artist like Wouwerman to create multiple drawings with same composition for the art market. The fact that the sheet is dated and signed with Wouwerman's monogram, indicates that is was seen as a finished product rather than a preparatory workshop drawing. Wouwerman only started to date his drawings after 1646.
