Lot description

Oblong folio: x-24-x-40 pp.; 6 pl., 35 maps (light damp stains).

Contemp. calf, modern paper covers, gilt decorated spine with 6 bands (original binding worn).

Rare later Roman edition, with appendix by Jean-Conrad Schwartz, of Cellarius' alluring historical atlas (1st ed.: 1686) covering the Ancient World and the 3 continents of Africa, Asia and America. The work by Giovanni Battista Ghigi and François Tiroli is an enlarged version of Samuel Patrick's London edition of 1714. As is explained in the "Lectoribus humanissimis", it includes, besides Cellarius' 34 maps: 7 supplementary plates for decorative and other reasons (for instance an anemometer by Roger Boscovich), as well as an introduction on the origin and evolution of geography by Franciscus Jacquier, a French resident in Rome. With an interesting frontispiece by Angelus Campanella. Together, Ghigi and Tiroli published the next year "Le Véritable Guide des voyageurs en Italie" (Rome, Paul Giunchi, 1775).
Ref. BNE GMG/406. - Tooley I, 249. - BNF GE DD-4796 (88). - Venice, Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana 285.c.50.
