Lot description

Leipzig, J.F. Gleditsch, 1731-1732

2 vol., 4to: front.-[14]-1088-70; [12]-20-970-[62] pp.; 21 + 13 engr. maps (light damp stains, paper gap in title 2nd vol., sl. browned, a few stains).

Contemp. mottled calf, gilt decorated spines with 5 bands, sprinkled paper edges (endbands sl. worn, corners sl. bumped).

Rare 3rd edition (1st ed.: 1701) published in Leipzig, of this early standard work on the geography of Classical Antiquity by the German classical scholar C. Cellarius (1638-1707). Although he was particularly credited with popularising the Ancient-Medieval-Modern division of history which was previously used by Leonardo Bruni and Flavio Biondo, this treatise on ancient geography made him the "Begründer des universitären Geographieunterrichts“, the founder of geography as an academical discipline. Engr. ill.: author's portrait by J.M. Bernigeroth, 34 double-page maps of Europe (I), Asia & Africa (II).
Ref. ESTC T144498. - COPAC. - Memoirs of Goethe (London, H. Colburn: 1824), vol. 2: p. 199. - Not in BnF.
