Lot description

Ghent, au local de la Société (casino); Brussels, chez Muquardt; Liège, rue Jonkeu, 1845-1849

5 vol., 8vo.

Half green shagreen, cloth over covers, gilt orn. spines on 4 raised bands (some min. rubbing), marbled endpapers. Nice set.

Publication compiled by Ghent botanist and horticulturist Charles Morren (1807-1858) illustrated with 5 identical engr. titles by Ch. Onghena and 291 lithogr. plates showing nice flowers and fruits (lacking pl. 133 (?), probably never bound with; Nissen mentions 291 pl.), heightened or chromolithogr. by G. Severeyns ou Alex. Lagarde of which 10 folding and 10 pl. in bl/w of which 2 folding; some woodcuts in text. Morren was director of the Jardin botanique de l'Université de Liège and was the first to discover a method for artificial pollination, which made it possible to cultivate vanilla in the French colonies (Wikipedia).
