Old calf (rubbed, corners bumped, some worming), boards with gilt central oval ornament within double blind-stamped border and gilt corner pieces, flat spine (rebacked).

Incomplete copy of the rare first Italian edition. With woodcut ill.: allegorical title, 2 dedicatory front. with coat of arms and portrait of Philip II, 2 (of 5) maps (Low Countries (copper), Hainaut) and 9 (of 12) city maps & views on double page (Leuven, Brussels, Antwerp cathedral and city hall (copper), Den Bosch, Amsterdam, Ghent, Bruges, Liège). This ed. contains a lot of printing mistakes, wrong pagination and a register which can hardly be used. Guicciardini's work in Italian was trsl. and ed. into French, Dutch, Latin and even into German and English all through the 16th and part of the 17th c. In these later ed. the woodcuts were replaced by copper engr.
