Guicciardini's famous description of the Netherlands (1st Italian ed.: 1567) published here by Janssonius with identical text to the Blaeu 1612 edition, a Dutch translation by Cornelis Kiliaan (1578-1607) of the Italian Plantin edition from 1581. It comprises a description of the Low Countries in the 1st part and of the Northern Netherlands in the 2nd part. Engr. ill.: coat of arms of the 17 Provinces and 99 (of 100) single or double pl., including one general map of the Netherlands, several detailed maps, city plans/views of Leuven, Brussels, Antwerp (4 views on buildings), Mechelen, Ghent, Ostend, Dunkirk, Lille, Douai, Mons, Namur, Liège, Luxembourg... and Arnhem, Zaltbommel, Haarlem, Dordrecht, Amsterdam (3 views on buildings), Gouda, Hoorn, Gorinchem, The Hague, Middelburg, Zwolle, Groningen, etc. Without the often missing pl. of the town hall of Middelburg. Janssonius' choice to republish the Blaeu edition unchanged is remarkable given, in the same year, the signing of the Peace of Münster marking the formal recognition of the independent Dutch Republic.
