Lot description

Amsterdam, J. van Royen, T. ten Hoorn, 1681

12mo: [6]-439-[25-2 bl.] pp. (browning throughout, some min. dampstaining in the margins).

Contemp. overl. vellum (rebacked, joints repaired).

First Dutch edition (orig. Latin ed. 1660) of this vulgarising work on medicinal plants, herbs, minerals and preparation methods for various medicines. Sir K. Digby (1603-1665), English courtier and diplomat, was a highly reputed natural philosopher but also regarded as an eccentric partly because of his interests in the occult. One of his pursuits was the concept of the powder of sympathy, a form of sympathetic medicine consisting vitriol "whereby a remedy was applied to the weapon that had caused a wound with the aim of healing the injury it had made. Weapon salve was a preparation, again applied to the weapon, but based on material from the wounded patient rather than on any remedy for the wound" (Wikipedia). Ill. with an engr. front. and 1 fold. engr. pl.
Ref. STCN. - Cp. Krivatsy 3246, Ferguson I:213. - Not in Duveen, Caillet (only other eds).
Prov. "Auguste Boschman" (ms. ownership entry).
Bound with: Id. - Nieuwe beproefde en wel ondersochte genees-middelen ofte zeltsame verborgentheden. Ibid., 1680. 281-[6-1 bl.] pp. First Dutch edition (orig. 1668) of this potpourri of chemical, medical, gastronomic and cosmetic recipes. Ref. STCN. - Krivatsy 3229.
