Lot description

[17th c.]

Album with 52 engravings, various sizes, laid paper (some prints trimmed at frame line or plate mark, occ. foxing).

Some prints pasted on paper, in mod. leather album with plastic sheet holders.

Exceptional collection with 33 engravings by Johannes I Valdor (1580-1640), and his son Johannes II Valdor (1616-1674). Johannes Valdor, born in Liège, was a pupil of H. Wierix and became active as a draughtsman, etcher and engraver at the court of Charles IV, duke of Lorraine in Nancy and set up a print shop in Paris in 1632. With his printed oeuvre he contributed to the counter-reformation in France. His son continued the business in Liège. Due to their small format and religious utilitary function, these prints have become extremely rare. The prints include The Nativity, The Mystic Marriage of St. Catharine, St. Veronica, and the Ecce Homo. Ref. New Hollstein XXXII. - Renier, Catalogue de l'oeuvre des Waldor, 1865. Joined: 19 various religious engravings, including prints by Natalis and R. de Sadeleer.
