Lot description

First half 20th c

More than 500 photos, diapositives, dianegatives and glass negatives in 40 cardboard (Kodak) boxes.

More than 400 glass negatives (13 x 18 cm, 18 x 24 cm) showing luxury everyday objects such as keys, keyholders, ashtrays, plates, chandeliers, paperweights, medallions, holy water vessels, chalices, pipe holders, pen holders, mortars, letter openers, weatherglasses, little boxes, tobacco holders, crucifixes, letter boxes, vases, lamp bases etc. All designed by the Art Deco sculptor Max Le Verrier (1891-1973), son of a Belgian mother and a French father. During his years in a WWI prisoner-of-war camp he started modelling clay and began sculpting. In 1917 Le Verrier went to the School of Arts in Geneva where he made his first statuettes. Later he returned to Paris where he had a workshop in Rue du Théâtre where he carved his first sculpture, the famous Pelican. Among the photographs we found several pictures of pelicans which were clearly pre-studies. Somewhat later he sculpted a collection of animals inspired by zoos and circuses. The artist and his "atelier" grew over the years making popular motoring mascots, more statuettes, ceiling lights, wall brackets, lamp bases, and bookends. After WWII, during which he was forced to flee, he restarted his artistic activities focusing mainly on the creation of bronze items such as boxes, ashtrays, office & religious items and medals all inspired by antique or medieval masterpieces and collections in museums, etc. These bronze items are the main subject of all the glass negatives. - More than 200 photo negatives mostly showing people, presumably his family, and (study) objects. Most likely, Max Le Verrier is also pictured in these images. - More than 100 photos showing crucifixes and animals. - Two boxes with positive and negative slides showing animals and sculptures.
