Lot description
[18th c]
Drawing, pen and black ink with gray and brown wash, heightened with white, framing line in pen and black ink, 24,4 x 33,5 cm, laid paper with early 18th.-c. watermark (some stains at right edge).
Stuck at corners on mod. paper with attribution.
The landscape is most likely copied after Jan Both's (1615-1652) engraving with the same composition from the series "Landscapes of the environs of Rome". When comparing with the original print, certain figures have been ommited or replaced, most notably the mule in the foreground and a traveller with a mule in the left background. Based on the analysis of the watermark the drawing must have been made after the beginning of the 18th century. Ref. Hollstein III:7, p. 161. - Heawood 1833 (watermark).
