Lot description
2 drawings, pencil, red ink, 36,4 x 21,2 cm and 16,2 x 40 cm, laid paper, dated at upper right corner.
Mounted under passe-partout.
A detailed elevation drawing and a ground plan of the Benedictine monastery of Monte Cassino, near Naples. French text on the ground plan reads "Monastère du Mont Cassin à S. Germano (Royaume de Naples) fait par Fonzago archit. 1649". This refers to Cosimo Fonzago (1591-1678), a famous Neapolitan sculptor and architect who worked on many baroque churches in Naples and its surroundings, including Monte Cassino. These drawings may have been copied in 1840 after the original seventeenth-century drawings.
