Lot description

Nuremberg, [1610]

Etching, 14,6 x 18,4 cm, paper (sl. toned).

Framed under blue passe-partout, wooden frame (not unframed). Good condition.

Leaf of an album of 60 ornament prints, entitled "Neüw Grottessken Buch". The etching playfully depicts an angel-shaped ornament blowing smoke from its upturned head. At the upper right and left corners winged bellows and a winged oil lamp. Although ornament prints often functioned as model sheets for craftsmen and artists, these prints were quickly collected for their aesthetic value. Christoph Jamnitzer (1563-1618) was the third generation in a family of famous Nuremberg court goldsmiths and printmakers (grandson to Wenzel Jamnitzer) who specialised in the publication of ornament prints and luxurious goldsmith work. The prints in this album were most likely to be enjoyed and collected for their playful and humorous nature. Ref. Hollstein I. - Warncke II.967. - De Groot 354.7.
