First edition of this famous set of engravings by the Augsburg Catholic publisher-engravers G.B. Götz (1708-1774) and the brothers J.S. (1710-1768) and J.B. (1712-1787) Klauber. Engr. ills: frontisp., 12 part titles at the beginning of each month and 379 plates: 1 for each day of the year; 2 pls for 1, 5, 8, 28 January, 7 April and 2 July; 3 pls for 6 January; and 6 pls for 6 Catholic Feasts. The plates show scenes out of the life or the martyrdom of the Saint of each day, with a Latin Bible verse and sometimes captured in a typical baroque architectural border. Remarkable are the very detailed, finely engraved and mostly animated backgrounds and locations in which the saints figure: landscapes, interiors, city views, architectural elements, libraries, study rooms, gothic and baroque churches, etc. Ref.
