Lot description

The Hague, Jean Martin Husson, 1739

4to: [8]-383-[13] pp.; 42 pls (some wormholes through the 1st leaves, some folds +/- torn, 1 tear repaired, some foxing).

Contemp. half calf, ink sprinkled paper on covers, gilt tooled spine with raised bands and red leather label (upper flyleaf disbound, calf partly renewed, general wear).

Third enlarged counterfeit Dutch edition (1st counterf. ed.: 1711), the original having been published in 1709 in Paris (re-ed. 1713, 1722, 1732). This influential treatise on garden architecture and horticulture was written by the French author Dezallier d'Argenville (1680-1765). Anonymous ed., complete with 42 folding plates, unnumbered and unsigned, depicting ground plans of gardens, pumps, fountains, etc. Some woodcuts in text and woodcut ornament on title. Title printed in red & black. With additional pp. 315-318 (Rr2-3) containing cancelans, bound at the end. Ref. De Ganay 45.- Hunt 421.- Images de jardins [Exhibition cat.]. Namur, Bibl.
