4to: 599-[11 (of 13)] pp. (2 pp. missing; occ. foxing, sm. damp stain to lower margin in the begin.).
18th-c. marbled sheep, gilt-orn. spine with raised bands, red spr. edges (some sm. traces of use, lower flyleaf missing).
Rare second Latin edition by Pierre Gilles (1st 1533) of this collection of brief stories on animals, containing the first description on the nature of elephants. Also with extracts of works from the Neoplatonic philosopher Heliodorus Prusaensis and the Greco-Roman poet Oppianus. At the end the "De gallicis et latinis nominibus piscium Massiliensium" by the translator Gilles (1490-1555), who also was ichthyologist, listing the Latin and Provencal names of fishes in Marseille. Printer's mark on title.
