Lot description

Basel, J. Oporinus, (March 1554)

2 pts in 1 vol., folio: [6] ff.-1282 [= 1268] col.-[1 bl.] f., [1] f.-486 [= 474] col.-[5] pp. (soiling and some foxing, marg. damp stains - one very pale in the begin. -, tear strengthened to f. [6], wormholes and wormtrack(s) to upper margins - some strengthened -, sm. hole in M4, stain on text of quire HH of 2nd part, last ff. soiled with some mouldy spots, sm. holes in last f. of text, upper part of the last f. of the vol. reinforced).

Early 19th-c. three-quarter sheep, later spr. paper on boards, gilt-ruled spine with raised bands, red spr. edges (old restorations, rubbed).

Independent version of the Bible edited by the French humanist and theologian Sébastien Castellion (1515-1563), first published in 1551. Castillon "aroused bitter hostility among Calvin's followers by the publication of his Latin and French translations of the Bible" (D&M). Illustrated in the "Annotationes" with 18 woodcuts in-text ill. (i.a. representing a menorah, furniture of the tabernacle and a pontiff) and some diagrams. Text in 2 col. ornamented with large historiated initials. Oporinus' device on title (fig. Arion riding on a dolphin) and a large one on verso of last leaf. Neat typography.
