Lot description

(München, Bremer Presse, 1926)

Large folio (45 x 35 cm): [23] ff.

Loose as issued. Publ. portefolio.

Very rare complete collection of titles and initials designed by Anna Simons (1871-1951) for the Bremer Presse. She studied at the Royal College of Art in London and was a student of Edward Johnston in 1900. She began to work for the Bremer Presse in 1918. There, she designed many titles and initial sets for the Presse, and in 1926, this portfolio was issued to showcase her work. Each sheet in the portfolio is headed by one of Simons' Bremer Presse title designs, including her titles for Bacon's Essay, Dante's Divine Comedy, Fichte's Reden an Die Deutsche Nation, Homer's Iliad, and others. The titles are followed by the initials she cut for the work. One of the 220 copies printed on a hand printing press.
