Although mostly known today for his paintings of domestic interiors with cats and dogs, the Brussels painter Van den Eycken (sometimes known as Duchêne) was also a prolific landscape painter. According to a ms. note by the artist on verso, this is a smaller version of a painting which was exhibited in Brussels in 1851.
