Lot description
1843 and 1844
2 watercolours, 20,5 x 28 cm, velin paper, signed and dated at bottom "Gobaut, 1843" (both laid down on paper).
Magnificently detailed depictions of the battles of El Affroun and Méchounech in Algeria, during the French invasion of the country. Gobaut (1814-1882) was a French artist mostly known for his Parisian city views and his depiction of the Algerian Wars, working in the tradition of Horace Vernet, of whom he was probably a student. Similar watercolours of the African Wars are now in the Musée Condé collection at Chantilly.
