6 parts in 1 vol., 4to: front.-xvi-31, 31, 31, 32, 32, 27-[9] pp.; 6 pl. (foxing, occ. staining).

Contemp. green morocco, covers with central gilt coat of arms ruled with a triple fillet, gilt orn. (Greek urns) flat spine, yellow edges, pink paper pastedowns and flyleaves (rubbed, spine sl. faded).

First edition of the mock-epic poem written by R.O. Cambridge (1717-1802). The hero is Martinus Scriblerus, character/author created by The Scriblerus Club (informal association of authors, Jonathan Swift and Alexander Pope being the nucleus) through whose writings they accomplished their satirical aims. Illustrated with a frontispiece, 6 plates by L.-P. Boitard (placed at the begin. of each book; one showing the aerial combat between an English and a German) and 1 vign. title. Separate title for each book; p. 32 of Book 5 in variant 2 with an ornament in place of the note stating that purchasers of the imperfect Book 4 could obtain a "perfect page".
