Lot description
6 parts in 1 vol., 4to: [30]-96-[2], [8]-84-[4], 88 pp.; 65 pl. (clear damp stain in upper margin, sm. def. like sm. tear of pieces of paper missing).
Contemp. calf (corners rubbed), spine with 4 raised bands (head and tail def.), marbled endpapers.
Later, corrected impression of this work consisting of 6 parts, each with a separate title. In the first two parts, van der Groen (1624-1671), gardener of the Prince of Orange, discusses the design and planting of gardens for country houses and castles. Both parts ill. with an engr. title, 15 engr. full-page pl. and 46 full-page woodcuts representing perspective views and plans of garden designs, depictions of fountains, sundials, flowerbeds, labyrinths, trellises and "lust arbors". In the 4 other parts, the physician Nylandt discusses the activity during the 12 months of the year (planting and harvesting vegetables, fruit, herbs and so on), the beneficial effects of various crops, the preparation of medicines and remedies for humans and animal and apiculture, concluding with kitchen recipes, instructions for slaughtering animals, preparing jam. These parts ill. with one engr. title and 3 engr. vign. on title, one full-page engr. and one full-page woodcut. Overall ill. with woodcuts in-text. Printed in roman and Gothic type.
