Lot description

Engraving, 19 x 14 cm, laid paper, signed and dated in plate at lower left "HGoltzius Invent. A° 1597".

Under passe-partout and frame (not studied outside frame).

Nice impression of the 1st state, before publ. address of Valck. With imperial privilege and Latin calligraphic text by Schonaeus. Jacob Matham (1571-1631) was Goltzius' pupil and stepson, who executed many of his master's designs into prints. He took over the Goltzius print enterprise in Haarlem around 1600.
