Complete 1871 edition (1st ed.: 1857) of this magnificent American atlas with 200 maps on 129 sheets as is quoted in the index, but different from the title. Also, the single map sheet of Alaska, appears to be a printing error. All maps are finely steel engraved with a great sense of detail, and provided with attractive decorative borders. The J.H. Colton cartographic firm, founded by G.W. Colton's father Joseph Hutchins Colton (1800-1893), was known for its prolonged use of time-consuming hand watercolouring.
