(some parts of vol. sl. browned, tear without lack to the pl. - bound upside down - of the battle against Jugurtha p. 107 in vol. I, very sm. tear with sm. hook to p. lvii in vol. I, very occ. marg. staining, tear strengthened to p. 56 of vol. II, ff. of quire Xx inverted in vol. II).

Contemp. marbled calf, gilt orn. spines with raised bands and red & green morocco labels, a.e.g. (rubbed, head & tail of vol. I missing, joints of vol. II and front joint of vol. III partly split).

First edition of the critical study of the works of Sallustius by Charles de Brosses (1709-1777), President of the Parliament of Dijon. Illustrated with the medallion portrait of Brosses, engraved by Saint-Aubin after Cochin, 1 fold. map of Numidia, 2 fold. genealogical tables (kings of Numidia and of the general Metellus), 2 battle plans (one fold. of the Muthul War opposing Jugurtha to the consul Quintus Caecilius Metellus Numidicus), 9 bust portraits (Pompeius, Sylla, Cicero, Sallustius...) and 9 pl. of medals.
