Contemp. mottled sheep, gilt border on covers titled "Collège Royal de Versailles" (corners rubbed, scratches on covers), gilt orn. flat spine (joints rubbed, head and tail def.), marbled endpapers, marbled edges.

Third edition (first 1798) by the Enlightenment Era mathematician and astronomer Lagrange (1736-1813) who made significant contributions to the fields of analysis, number theory, and both classical and celestial mechanics. Important work on the origin of group theory and modern algebra. Lagrange gives the method of approximating the true root of a numerical equation by continuous fractions, as well as the proof that every equation must have a root. P
