Strasbourg, Knobloch press by G. Messerschmidt, 1543

4to: [52]-262 [= 260]-[51] pp. (mould spots in lower blank margin throughout, some ff. waterstained in blank margins, upper pastedown and flyleaf replaced in 19th c.).

17th-c. Dutch overl. vellum, flat spine, red sprinkled edge (2 tears and trace of ink on flat spine). Good copy.

First edition printed in Strasbourg and illustrated with 89 woodcuts depicting i.a. architectural details, monuments, machines, and plans, based on those of the Como 1521 edition. The text is printed in italics with chapter headings and capitals in romans. This edition ends with Cusanus' "De staticis experimentis" and Fontinus' "De aquaeductibus". First printed in 1486 (and in 1511 with illustrations), Vitruvius' treatise was written in ca. 25 BC and hence the sole extant contemporary source on classical architecture and most valuable for the knowledge of building techniques and methods of ancient Rome. The rediscovery of Vitruvius' work had a deep impact on the way of thinking of early Renaissance architects.
Ref. Adams V-906. - Fowler 401. - VD16 V-1763. - USTC 674607. - Berlin Kat. 1806. - Not in STC German (BL).
