5 vol., folio (not collated, foxing, marg. damp stains in vol. I & III, some ff. sl. browned).

Contemp. marbled calf, gilt orn. spines with raised bands, red edges (some covers sl. rubbed, front joints of vol. I & IV partly split, most of corners bumped, some sm. scratches, classification labels pasted on front covers).

Most complete edition of the main work of Zeger Bernard van Espen (1646-1728), Leuven Professor of Canon law and defender of Gallican theories. It still is a basic text for our understanding of the workings of the Catholic Church in 17th-18th-c. Europe, dealing with all aspects of the duties of the clergy. Pt. I (pp. 358-360) i.a. discusses "De beguinis"; Pt. II gives a detailed account of crimes commited by members of the clergy; Pt. III is a large-scale commentary on canon law; Pt. IV gives an historical survey of canon law; Pt. V is a supplement. Text in 2 col.
