Amsterdam, I.B. Elwe, [1792]

Folio: engr. title-22 pp., 39 nicely coloured hinge-mounted pl. (minor defects).

Contemp. half calf, paper covers, ribbed spine (sl. rubbed).

Very rare first edition of Elwe's atlas with an allegorical title by J. van Monnikhuyse after L. Webbers, Louis Renard's "Planisphere" representing the Titan Atlas with a north polar azimuthal projection on his shoulders, a star map, a world map and 34 maps, many reissues of De L'Isle, Ottens and others, as well as a geopolitical table of Europe and a table of distances between European towns. The maps of Germany (pl. 14) and the Balkan Peninsula (pl. 24) published by Elwe were replaced by: 1. Cornelis Kribber's "Imperii romano-germanici in suos status et circulos divisi tabula generalis" (Utrecht, 1750). The presence of this 2 pl. map of Turkey published by the Utrecht bookseller Kribber (1739-1780) after Homann's earlier map is surprising given its rarity. Kribber had a good knowledge of old exemplars and collections; this enabled him to be agent to Giuseppe Garampi (1725-1792), prefect of the Vatican Archives from 1751 until 1772, and a notorious bibliophile. The mapmaker with his bookshop behind the City Hall in Utrecht was also regent of the Roman Catholic "Armenkamer" there. Although Kribber called himself a map dealer, and also engraved a map of Friesland after F. Halma (Frisiae Dominium, vernacule Friesland), maps from his hand are extremely rare. Therefore, it should not be a surprise that this map of Germany is even not present in the collection of the National Library in Berlin. - 2. Pieter Schenck's "Regni Hungariae Graeciae et Moreae regionumque finitimarum" (Amsterdam, P. Schenck), a re-edition of Sanson's map. Finally, there is the interesting and prominent display of a female geographic allegory on the frontispiece: two women, one charting the globe, the other designing the map, dominate the representation of geographic knowledge, thus addressing the convergence of art and cartography. A rare gendered representation of cartography!
