2 vols., 4to: viii-[6]-409-[1], vi-[10]-389-[1] pp.; 124 pls (untrimmed edges, some occ. spots, some pls wrongly bound).

Modern three-quarter vellum, flat spine with red leather labels (sl. worn).

First edition of the translation by Mourier ill. with 1 repeated etched vignette on titles and 124 pls (complete) of India (monuments and sculptures), Iraq (cuneiform writing, views of Mossul, Bagdad...), Iran (Persepolis, men wrestling...), Turkey, Syria (view on Alep), Lebanon, etc. As an astronomer and cartographer, the German Niebuhr (1733-1815) was sent in 1761 by the King of Denmark to "Arabia Felix". He came back 6 years later as the sole survivor of the mission, returning overland via Persia, Syria, Cyprus and Constantinople. A third, supplementary vol. published in German in 1837 (Hamburg, Fr. Perthes, not present here) describes Syria and Palestine. Ref. Brunet IV:74. - Gay 3589. - Atabey 874 (Swiss ed., 1880). - Not in Blackmer.
