Large folio: engr. title, 26 maps, printed index, contemp. hand-coloured (normal green oxidation on verso, sometimes stronger with sm. lacunas esp. on pl. 24. la Mer Méditerranée and 27. Terra Sancta, some maps folded (16-18, 22), sm marg. tear in pl. 22. Savoye, a few repairs and sm. spots).
Later (19th-c.?) sheep, mottled paper covers (tr. of use).
Rare variant of the first edition of Peter Schenk's "Sanson's atlas", compiled shortly after he had moved to the Vijgendam in 1706, hence the date "1706" on some maps, notably the world map "Diversa Orbis Terrae. Visu Incedente per Coluros Tropicorum" (P. Schenk, 1706, n. 6 of Koeman's list on p. 119). Complete with engr. title by J. Baptist, after G. de Lairesse and Ph. Tideman, a world map, the four continents, the usual maps of the various European states and the printed index of the 1st ed. with all 26 maps listed present. Different from Koeman's copy is the fact that some maps (world map, Dania, Anglia, Hispania) are dated 1706, making this copy a variant of the 1st edition, which is usually dated around 1700. Petrus Schenk published new engravings of Sanson's better and more modern maps by N. Visscher, Danckerts a.o.
