The Last Judgement.

Engraving from 12 plates on 12 sheets, ca. 47,6 x 40,3 cm (9 image plates), ca. 25,3 x 40,4 cm (3 text plates), ca. 168 x 122 cm (total when mounted), wove paper, signature and address at bottom left: "IOANNES COUSIN SENONIEN / SIS INVENIT ET PINXIT. / Petrus de Iode in aes Incidit / a Paris chez P. Drevet aux Galleries", Latin text at bottom centre, French and Latin text in lower margin (underlaid with Japanese paper, sm. marginal tears restored, some spots, few holes, some discolourations but not visible when mounted).

Good, later impression, mostly with margins. Loose in mod. custom-made green cloth box with green leather label, gold-stamped: "JUGEMENT DERNIER / IOANNES COUSIN / PEINTRE / PETRUS DE IODE / SCULPTEUR".

Impressive monumental print after and with the same dimensions as the painting by Jean Cousin II (ca. 1522-1595) in Paris (Louvre, inv. 3445). A wealth of angels and saints surrounding Christ in the clouds, below a variety of devils dragging people to hell. Complete set including all image and text plates. Pieter de Jode I (1573-1634) produced this highly ambitious engraving in 1615 for Guillaume Wittenbroot, an art dealer who organized lotteries of paintings and luxury items in France. 4th state with the address of Pierre Drevet (1663-1738). This impression from ca. 1800. The print was approved by the Antwerp theologian Laurentius Beyerlinck (1578-1627) and is dedicated to Louis XIII (1601-1643), King of France. It is described in the New Hollstein as "his most impressive work" showing "his skills as an engraver from the Goltzius school, most notably in the bulging clouds in the upper part with the curved, strictly parallel lozenge shaped cross hatchings filled in with small dots and lines in the most shaded areas."
