4to: [engr. front.]-xvi-118 pp.; 39 pl. (marg. soiling f. H3, light spotting).

Contemp. calf, gilt spine with 5 raised bands (binding with little shelfwear).

In this rare work John Ellis (1710-1776) makes a clear distinction between plants and animals and proves that corals and Bryozoa are animals. This Dutch ed., translated by Jan Tak, includes a hand-coloured front. of a beautiful marine scene and 39 hand-coloured engr., of which 5 fold. (not present in the original English ed.), showing the multiplication of corals. The other pl. depict chickweed, sea plants, corals and Cuff's microscope. The original hand-colouring is exceptionally well-done in this copy. Title in black and red.
