2 parts in one vol., 4to: [2]-viii-55-[8]-8-599-[1 bl.]-601/1187-[53] pp.; 40 pl. (author's portrait missing, first title sl. browned).
Contemp. calf, spine with 4 raised bands, marbled edges (covers rubbed and scratched, corners bumped, joints rubbed, starting to split).
Second corr., enl. Latin ed. (first German 1743) by the German anatomist, surgeon and botanist born in Frankfurt am Main, L. Heister (1683-1758). The work was extensively used in Japan, and was still employed as a standard text at Vienna as late as 1838. Ill. with 40 engr. fold. plates representing the arsenal of surgery of the 18th century and some figures of surgeons operating. We owe Heister the invention of the first appendectomy operation, post-mortem, and the introduction of the term "tracheotomy". Engr. vign. on title. Titles in red & black.
