Drawings, pen and brown ink, 3 with grey blue wash, 1 with light brown wash, all heightened in white, ca. 24,8 x 17,8 cm (visible), laid paper, unsigned (few spots, few small tears on the edges, few microscopic holes).
Under passe-partout and frame (not studied outside frame). Studied with raking light, but no watermarks found. Good condition.
Interesting ensemble of Northern Renaissance drawings. The sheets depict Christ washing the feet of the disciples, the Last Supper, the Flagellation of Christ and Ecce Homo. In terms of technique and composition, our drawings are influenced by the work of Lambert van Noort (active ca. 1549-1565) and also Jan Swart van Groningen (active ca. 1522-1558). These draughtsmen and painters produced similar sheets as models for prints and stained glass windows. For examples by Lambert van Noort, see Vienna (Albertina, inv. 7891) and New York (The Metropolitan Museum of Art, inv. 1995.44). For examples by Jan Swart, see Amsterdam (Rijksmuseum, inv. RP-T-1897-A-3479) and Vienna (Albertina, inv. 13253).
