Contemp. marbled calf richly gilt decorated, boards with large floral dentelle, large vase with bouquet in the angles, second floral frame and central coat of arms, ornated spine with five raised bands, red morocco title-label, roll on cuts, red sp. edges (sl. cracked spine, turn-ins and corners skillfully restored, but sm. tear on lower turn-in). Nice copy.

Beautiful and interesting binding with the Stadholder's arms, decorated with a rich floral design executed in The Hague in the 18th century. The tools make it possible to identify the workshop called "Flower Bindery" by J. Storm van Leeuwen. This workshop, active from 1735 or ca. 1751 to ca. 1780/1781, is characterised by "the copious application of flowers, impressed with high-quality tools" (Dutch Decorated Bookbinding I:173). Other bindings attributed to this workshop bear the Stadholder's arms, e.g. another military regulation printed at the same address in 1770 (ibid. IIa:176: "Reglement en ordres voor de wagten [...]"); "[...] the binding on "Reglementen en ordres" of some four years later [= ca. 1770] also have been commissioned by its Hague publisher Scheltus, as a present to the Stadholder" (ibid. IIa:176-177).
