Original Dutch edition of this famous sailing manual for Indiamen, later translated in Latin and French. Van Linschoten (1563-1611) obtained first-hand information on the Portuguese routes to Africa and Asia during his voyages to East Asia as a clerk of the newly appointed Portuguese archbishop of Goa, the capital of Portuguese India. After his return in his hometown Enkhuizen in 1592, the publication of his navigational data was a crucial element in breaking the 16th-century monopoly enjoyed by the Portuguese in the East-Indian trade and the subsequent successes of the Dutch East-India Company. Besides sailing directions, the "Reys-gheschrift" contained the first Dutch descriptions of the Cape Route as well as navigating instructions for the Indian Ocean and the South Chinese Sea. It includes the routes for South-America and the Caribbean, the Strait of Magellan, Linschoten's account of Florida and many other places in North and South America. On his return, he passed by the Portuguese supply depot at St. Helena Island in May 1589, hence the two plates of the island. A second journey in 1594 made him participate in the expedition headed by Dutch cartographer Willem Barentsz. The portrait of the author and the 4 title pages are engraved by L. Cornelius and Jodocus Hondius (Shirley 182). With 6 maps engraved by Arnold and Hendrik van Langren; the double hemisphere world map by Jan Baptist Vrient (Shirley 192) shows the constellation of Columba located just south of Canis Major and recently discovered by Peter Plancius in 1592. The work also contains one of the earliest European accounts of tea-drinking in Japan (part 1, p. 36). The plates engraved by Joannes and Baptista van Doetecom, but drawn by van Linschoten himself, concern local habits, local nobility, regional dress and navigation. Due to the changed order in this volume, the two tables of the itinerary and the "Reijs-geschrift" are bound at the end after the title of 2B and its dedication (Enckhuysen, 1596) that come at the end of part 2B. Ref. Tiele, Mémoire bibliographique sur les Journaux des Navigateurs 83-91. - Sabin 41356. - Tiele 676. Prov. Louvain, monastic library (not identified stamp).
