Beschrijving lot

Drawing, black chalk, 29 x 42,5 cm, laid paper with watermark (fleur-de-lis with crown, Heawood: 1640), unsigned (several sm. creases).

Tipped by corners on paper mount.

Jason and Medea in the temple of Jupiter, paying homage to the ruler of the gods. Reverse copy after a Gobelin designed in 1748 by the French artist Jean-François de Troy (1676-1752). The tapestry was part of a series commissioned by the Bâtiments du Roi for the Gobelins tapestry manufacture. De Troy was commissioned to produce a series of cartoons for seven tapestries illustrating episodes from the story of Jason. An oil sketch in preparation of the tapestry is now in the collection of the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza (inv. 409), in Madrid.
Joined: Anonymous - Statue study of woman with a writing table (Rethorica?). Italian school, 17th c. Drawing, black chalk, 38 x 21,5 cm, laid paper with watermark (outlines of drawing pounced for transfer, trimmed to image and remargined, some creases). (2 pcs)
