Haarlem and Amsterdam, C.H. Bohn and H. de Wit, (1765)-[c. 1788]

5 pts. in 9 vols, 4to: [50]-280, [2]-281/568-[8], [12]-251-[1], [4]-253/580-[8], [4]-265-[1], [8]-267/573-[6]-[1 bl.], [12]-xxxi-[1 bl.]-[4]-220, xxvi-260 pp., 192 pp.; 389 pls, all hand-coloured except the portrait (some foxing, very occ. offsetting of colours, some very slight sm. stains).

19th-c. black half morocco with corners, gilt dec. flat spine. Supplement vol. in a mod. binding, green half simili-leather, flat spine with similar decoration (sl. rubbed boards and cuts, dulled corners). Wide-margined copy.

Rare 1st Dutch edition of one of the most beautiful books on insects, translated from the German "Der monatlich-herausgegebenen Insecten-Belustigung" (1st, Nüremberg, 1740-1761) and enlarged by C.F.C. Kleemann (1735-1789), son-in-law of the author, both in text and in plates. Entomologist, painter and art dealer Kleemann, and his wife, personally coloured all the plates for this edition. The illustrations incl. 3 frontispieces - by Martin Tyroff after Johann Justin Preisler (vol. 1), Aug. Joh. Rösel (vol. 2), and A.J. Rösel and Mich. Rössler after Nicol. Gabler (vol. 3) -, author's portrait, and 385 plates on 315 ll. (that is to say 1 more than the known copies) by the miniature painter, naturalist and entomologist Rösel von Rosenhof (1705-1759), except the 26 plates of the supplement by Kleemann. The rare unfinished supplement ("Vervolg"), probably published between 1788 and 1794, is the third variant quoted by Landwehr, with 192 pp. and without title-page, replaced in our copy by a contemporary handwritten title in green ink, finely surrounded by engraved cut and mounted leaved borders with plants, butterflies and caterpillars. The biography of the author is by the hand of Kleemann, the index by A.A. Van Moerbeek (vol. 4). Ref. Nissen (ZBI) 3467 (3 frontis., 1 portr., but only 356 pl. on 286/288 ll. incl. the "Vervolg"). - Landwehr (Dutch books with coloured plates) 161 (3 frontis., 1 portr., 384 pl. on 314 ll.; unclear collation, with some gaps and/or mistakes especially in sections "Scarabeae terrestres" and "Papiliones nocturnes"). Prov. J.C.J. de Joncheere, Dordrecht (stamp on loose leaves with handwritten tables). Haarlem, C.H. Bohn, 1779. 8vo: [8]-161-[ 1 bl.] pp. (rare marginal stains, untrimmed). Text printed in 3 columns, the first listing the food of the caterpillars, the second describing the caterpillars, the third referring to the Dutch edition of Rösel von Rosenhof. The index of plants, also in 3 columns, gives names in Dutch, German and Latin. (Tog. 2 works in 10 vol.)
