[Paris], Gatteaux, 1811

Wood-engraving (?) on 1 f. (35 x 34,5 cm), laid paper (old folds), uncoloured.

In very good condition.

Uncut sheet with 24 court playing cards. The kings bear the names of David, Charles, Caesar and Alexander. The queens are Hildegarde, Abigail, Statira and Calpurnie, while the jacks are named Azael, Ogier, Parmenion and Curion. The name of the French engraver and playing card maker Nicolas-Marie Gatteaux can be seen in the shield of the jack of clubs, just as the date "1811". In 1808, Napoleon asked the painter J.L. David to create a new design for "the Paris pattern". The deck wasn't adopted until Gatteaux adapted it in 1811. Without colouring.
