Contemp. gold-tooled dark morocco, covers with gilt ruled frames, corner pieces and central IHS ornament, gilt spine, a.e.g., metal clasps and catches (sl. rubbed, joints starting to split at head and tail). Very good copy.

Rare Venetian missal bound for a Catholic priest in Protestant South-Holland: Cornelius van Reynegom (1581-1636), a protégé of the Arenberg family, was raised at their former estate Honselersdijk and in the village of Naaldwijk, where his father was the Arenberg’s steward. He became a Catholic priest and was the last dean of Naaldwijk. The Arenberg properties were sold to Frederick Henry, Prince of Orange, in 1612. Cornelius then moved to Zevenbergen, Antwerp (as a confessor of the Victorines), and finally died at Delft.
The missal was printed in red and black, with liturgical music, and illustrated with 16 full-page woodcuts, 10 of these with vivid contemp. colouring. In their blank bottom margin the name of Cornelius van Reynegom was written in gold. The upper blank margins bear other names written in gold: Ernestus a Kerckem, Judocus de Moll, Joannes Hartardus a Palandt, Judocus vande Reck, and more. Could these have been Reynegom’s benefactors? The names on p. 48 were later erased.
