Contemp. calf (repaired at corners, sides and spine), gilt orn. spine with 5 raised bands.
Rare second edition (1st 1561) of the French trsl. by Antoine du Pinet from the Latin "Di Pedacio Dioscoride Anazarbeo Libri cinque Della historia" (1544) by the Italian doctor and naturalist P.A.G. Mattioli (1501-1577). Illustrated with more than 650 woodcuts in-text, reduced in size after the Venice edition of 1565, showing mainly plants and animals. Besides medical plants the book also contains short zoological chapters and a chapter on distillation. Mattioli was best known for his works on botany and medicine. His aim was to help doctors and apothecaries to enable them to identify the medicinal plants mentioned by Dioscorides. The many editions that followed in vernacular languages, first in French, rendered the work accessible to scholars throughout Europe.
