Third octavo edition of the superb coloured plates by the famous artist Redouté (1759-1840). Reducing the format of the work did not compromise on quality. Compared to the first edition, the text was much revised and gives more information about cultivating roses. Complete with the 2 engr. portraits of Redouté and Thory, and with the 184 stipple-engr. plates printed in colour and finished by hand. The work describes and represents many varieties of roses known at the time, some dedicated to personalities such as: "la duchesse d'Orléans" or "rosier Redouté", etc. Redouté, born in Saint-Hubert, worked his whole career in France.
